The
Chinese Medical Association of Georgia was founded to help
physicians of Chinese descent in Georgia network with each other. The organization
meets every two months at a restaurant for a lecture on a primary care topic
and for dinner. The meetings are sponsored by various pharmaceutical companies
and with an average attendance of 80-100 people.

In 1988, while attending a CME meeting in Calloway Gardens, Drs. Luke Chang and Ching-Fuon Wang (2 old friends from medical school) came up with the.idea of forming a medical association for social networking. At that time, the few practicing Chinese physicians in the area were scattered around rural Georgia (Raymond Ho in Americus, Arthur Lee in Albany, Ching-Fuon Wang in Cedar town, Cheung Kung Ho in Macon, and Luke Chang in Wrightsville). The medical association would provide more opportunity to visit and share personal experiences, job opportunities and practice questions.
The first meeting was held in April 1990, and there were 20 attendees. In the beginning, all allied medical professionals were invited to join the association (physicians, nurses, chiropractors, dentists, and pharmacists). Because the association was small, the gatherings were held at members' homes every 2 months. We got to meet everyone's family members and had lots of fun.
Over the years, the association grew and gatherings at personal homes were not feasible anymore, so we moved to restaurants. The membership also became restricted to physicians only because of limitations at gathering sites.
Presently CMAGA has about 100 active members, and the meetings are attended usually by 40-50 members. Besides social networking, the meetings now have continuing medical education and practice management education. The meetings are sponsored by pharmaceutical companies and other interested entities.
Non-Chinese physicians who have an interest in Eastern culture are welcome to join the association and there are several on the membership roster.
The future for the CMAGA is to become more involved with community services and be a referral base for Chinese patients and physicians.
